Better Know a Record Store
Better Know a Record Store #14: Grooves
SEPTEMBER 28 2010 • By Polaris Music Prize
Troy Hutchinson, Owner
Grooves Records (London, ON)

What is your record store's claim to fame?
We're very friendly, knowledgeable (collectively over 250 years of record store experience - um approximately), but mostly we're known for our cuteness.

Which record on the Short List would you personally like to see win the Prize, and why?
Grooves will have to throw its support behind TSOL from Shad. It's a great album, easily the best hip hop album of the year & probably Shad's best. Mostly cuz he's a Londoner and we have to root for our home town boy. Go Shad! (I also really really like the Dan Mangan & Owen Pallett albums)

Reaction to the Long List: biggest surprise? Shocked by any omissions?
I'm always impressed by how the Polaris folks nail the majority of the great Canadian albums released.. I would have been cool to see Olenka & The Autumn Lovers on the list.. maybe next year.

What song or album title best describes the state of Canadian music?
"The Unpopular Stompin Tom Connors" by Stompin Tom Connors (when's Stompin Tom gonna win the Polaris lifetime achievement award?!)
p.s. there should be a Polaris lifetime achievment award - give one to Stompin Tom!

Imagine there is a new Polaris Record Store Prize and you are a nominee. What would you do with the $20,000 cash prize if you won?
We' ve always tried our best to support our local London music & arts scene. $20000 would go along way in helping out local bands & artists.
As far as the shop goes, we really want to make our store wheelchair accessible. We are kinda stuck with risers & levels that were here before we opened & although it's always been something we wanted to do, it's always been just a bit to expensive to swing... someday..
