Better Know a Record Store #3: Criminal Records September 14 2009
Josh Leonard, Co-owner, Criminal Records (Toronto)

Who are you? What's your store's claim to fame?

Criminal Records launched in 2006, and while the store new on the scene, its owners and employees have long been engrained in various facets of the music industry. Our goal is to keep record store culture alive, while helping promote great music from Canada and abroad.

You could say that our claim to fame is simply opening during the trend of closing record stores, and forging notoriety in the music industry and becoming a destination for music lovers in a short period of time. This, we believe, stems from great pricing, variety and customer service.
.

Which record on the Short List would you like to see win the Prize and why?

Chosing a favourite is always hard, especially when there are so many conflicting reasons on who truly deserves to win, but I would like to see the prize go to Chad Van Gaalen or Elliott Brood. Chad Van Gaalen is a lone wolf, and can reinvent himself in any number of ways (see Black Mold). Elliott Brood ooze Canadiana out of every pore, and continue to prove themselves with talent and determination. It's a tough choice..

Reaction to the Short List: Biggest surprise? Shocked by any
omissions?

A contest based on opinion will always be biased in the mind of those who are passionate. That being said, no Bruce Peninsula, and no Forest City Lovers?

Describe the state of Canadian music in 5 words:

Thriving despite major record companies.

Imagine there is a new Polaris Record Store Prize and you are a
nominee. What would you do with the $20,000 cash prize if you won?

While $20,000 can make eyes wide, we would keep it practical. We would do our best to make our store bigger and brighter, including more records and t-shirts, and spearhead pet projects that currently exist only in our heads.
