Please share the Top 5 Canadian records you put on your first ballot.

A girl needs a few secrets…

Tell us about your top ranked choice. Why #1?

I rated Joel Plaskett’s Three as number one. This isn’t a hometown-influenced decision; I don’t own any other Plaskett albums, but I thought it was one of the most ambitiously beautiful and creative albums to arrive on my desk in a long time, and that it will stand the test of time as a Canadian classic. It’s both personal and universal in scope, but most of all, I love the play between Plaskett's voice with Rose Cousins and Ana Egge.

Reaction to the Long List: Your most pleasant surprise? Shocked by any omissions?

Dog Day’s Concentration! I kept checking the list thinking that my alphabetical-order skills were off. Seth Smith is one of the most clever and underrated songwriters in Canada (On Happiness: “being a good person takes a lot of energy and hard work”), and I think the omission of this band is a real oversight. On a positive note, it’s giving me more time with some other albums, like D-Sisive’s Let The Children Die, which I’ve been listening to/loving a lot.

Describe the state of Canadian music in 5 words:

Too tough to pick top-fives.

Imagine the tables are turned and you are the nominee: What would you do with the $20,000 prize money?

I would take a tiny bit of that money and do something boring like get a series of decent photos done to send to nice music editors that would make their lives easier. Pay it forward, folks. Maybe a nice token for supportive mom/girlfriend/husband/landlord, pet, etc. Then I would pull a Yann Martel, but instead of sending books to Stephen Harper, I would mail the Prime Minister individual packages with all the Polaris nominees, including charming little notes about why he should listen to each band.
