Tell us about your top ranked choice. Why #1?

La Patère Rose is one of the most refreshing records of the year. A brilliant mix of French chanson with urban and modern instrumentation, which cleverly avoids the melancholy proper to the new wave of french pop songwriters (Dominique A, Jérôme Minière, Benjamin Biolay...). Emotions are diverse and intense and this young trio, in their early 20s, is already made up of solid musicians.

Reaction to the Long List: Your most pleasant surprise ? Shocked by any omissions ?

It shows a wide musical diversity, even though some genres are under-represented like jazz, classical or avant-garde. Very few francophone artists (3) made it through first round; it seems that language is a problem. Even big shots like Jean Leloup or Pierre Lapointe didn’t make it, although the same thing happened with Anglophones.

Describe the state of Canadian music in 5 words:

Serious players in many styles.

Imagine the tables are turned and you are the nominee : What would you do with the 20,000$ prize money ?

I would buy microphones and software to record my demos and albums. Basically, I’d like to become as independent as possible.
