Please share the Top 5 Canadian records you put on your final ballot.
Malajube Labyrinthes
Chad VanGaalen Soft Airplanes
Elliott Brood Mountain Meadows
Arkells Jackson Square
Woodpigeon Treasury Library Canada
Tell us about your top ranked choice. Why #1?
Oddly enough, Labyrinthes wasn't even in my original top ten choices. I thought it was a decent enough record when I first heard it, but about a month ago I had the opportunity to interview Malajube and see them live during Calgary's Sled Island Music Festival. This led me back to the album for another listen. This time, I really noticed how layered and complex the songs are and how easily Malajube can shift from breezy power-pop to dark, brooding, almost theatrical pieces. The musicianship is fantastic and odd, mid-song structural changes keep you on your toes. It's still on heavy rotation in my car.
Reaction to the Short List: Your most pleasant surprise? Shocked by any omissions?
I was happy to see three of my top five choices on the list. I'm glad K'NAAN made it too. I'm a little disappointed k-os or Sebastien Grainger aren't on the Short List this year, but I'm still mostly peeved that The Pack A.D.'s Funeral Mixtapedidn't even make it onto the Long List.
Describe the state of Canadian music in five words:
Calgary is the next Montreal. (Maybe)
Imagine the tables are turned and you are the nominee: What would you do with the $20,000 prize money?
Liposuction and Botox. Or is that being shallow? Actually, I would probably pay some bills, clear up all the Multinova/parking tickets I've somehow accumulated in the past two months and then travel the country from Vancouver Island to Newfoundland visiting friends, seeing shows and taking pictures of weird roadside attractions. If I had any money left over, I'd head over to the UK and Europe. Or rent the cabin next to Brendan Murphy and blare Elliott BROOD all summer.
